Toxic Skin Care Chemicals

We're exposed to toxic chemicals every day from the skin care products, hair products, and cosmetics we use on our skin.

I did this video recently with my son James because I wanted everyone to see how little we think about the toxic chemicals in most skin care products.

I think it really nails home the point that we're all exposed to many bad chemicals on a regular basis and never consider the consequences. I hope it encourages everyone to start reading ingredient labels and protecting themselves!

Here’s some more information about the three ingredients I mentioned in the video:

Acetone - Very common ingredient found in fingernail polish remover, toners, and astringents. It’s also used to dissolve superglue, permanent black magic marker, and is capable of dissolving most plastics. This chemical has been proven to damage your liver, kidneys, and nerves, and can kill you in significant doses.

Borax - Listed under the names: Sodium Borate and Boric Acid, this chemical is used by my Dad in welding metal. It’s also a detergent used in skin care products. This chemical strips the skin of natural oils and the protective acid mantle. This leaves your skin either dried out and tight, or over-stimulates your oil glands into overproduction.

Sulfates - This is referring to Sodium Laurel Sulfate, probably one of the most widely used chemicals in skin care, toothpaste, soaps, and cosmetics. It’s used as a filler and to create lather on the skin. SLS (a common abbreviation) can irritate the skin causing contact dermatitis.

The list of toxic skin care chemicals is probably thousands long. No we can’t eliminate all of them, but we can start reading labels and becoming more informed.
