How In Home Parties Work

A visual demonstration of traditional direct sales marketing

In Home PartiesWhen you mention direct sales, most people will instantly start thinking about in home parties. Here's how this process works:
Let's say you're an Independent Consultant working for a beauty product company.

You've joined your company because you love the products and you really want to make more money with a business of your own.

Step 1: Prospect List - The traditional marketing program your company uses will tell you to write a list of everyone you know and then call these people and tell them about your business.

In Home PartiesStep 2: Call Everyone - So you call up several friends and one decides to hold a party for you. This hostess will receive free products for holding the party for you if it generates enough sales. This is her incentive for holding the party for you.

Step 3: Build the Guest List - Now your friend needs to call at least 4 of her friends and get them to come to the party. Always encourage your hostesses to over book because many people will become mysteriously busy when the home party looms.

Always keep in mind that most direct sales companies have specific requirements for your party to count as a party.

If you don't have a minimum number of people attending (usually 4, not including your hostess) and a minimum amount in sales (usually $300), then your party will not count.

You'll still get paid your commission, but if your party doesn't have the required number of guests, sales, and bookings for more parties, your hostess will not get her free products for holding the party for you. No free products means no incentive, which means you might have an irritated hostess on your hands!

Step 4: Hold the Party - You show up on the selected day and give a 1 to 2 hour presentation about the products. Your job is to be fun, informative, energetic, and charismatic so that everyone has a great time.

In Home PartiesStep 5: Rake in the Sales - Yes, you're there to give everyone a great time, but ultimately you're there to make sales. You will get paid a commission for any sales you make. As a starting consultant this will probably be around 20%.

If you do your job well, you will get sales for products and bookings for more home parties. The system depends on you generating at least 1 new booking for every party you do. Without new bookings, you will not have any parties and therefore no way to sell products.

The downsides to this system can outweigh the benefits.

If you don't have many friends, or don't like the idea of selling products to your friends, then holding in home parties will be difficult.

Tapping into new groups of people who want to hold parties can also feel impossible. Most women don't want to be bothered with cleaning their house and having people over just to listen to a sales pitch all evening.

More and more people are turning to the Internet for ways to order products without the hassle of a holding a party.

If your business depends on this method of sales, and marketing through parties is all you know how to do, how will you succeed long term in direct sales?

Fortunately there are some direct sales companies that allow consultants to sell products online through personal websites. These untraditional marketing methods are much more effective at generating sales and building a customer base that will regularly reorder year after year.

In Home PartiesMarketing products online can work for anyone. It doesn't matter if you're extremely introverted or extroverted. On the Internet, you can reach thousands of customers without needing a dynamic personality or ravishing good looks.

Internet marketing is also easier and cheaper than selling products through in home parties. You don't have to drive anywhere, buy products, or spend money on gifts and incentives for your hostesses.

But most people don't have a clue how to get a business started on the Internet.
