Is Sunburn Dangerous During Pregnancy?

sunburn during pregnancyGetting a sunburn during your pregnancy is not dangerous, but should be avoided due to the discomfort it will cause. If your belly is getting large and uncomfortable, you will be even more out of sorts if you can't lie on your back or side due to a sunburn.

If you do get a sunburn during your pregnancy, you should use a soothing, aloe jelly or aloe rich lotion to calm the irritation and cool your skin.

Make sure to use an aloe jelly that's completely clear and odorless, otherwise it might contain synthetic fragrances and colorings that can be irritating to your skin and dangerous to your baby.

The best solution for sunburns is to stop them from happening. The following tips should help you to enjoy the sun without paying for it later:

  • Always wear a hat outside.

  • Stay out no longer than 1 hour in the sun.

  • Avoid being outside between 1 pm and 3 pm when the sun is hottest.

  • Layer lotion and sunscreen for full protection from UVA and UVB rays.

These are just common sense tips to follow whether you're pregnant or not. It's good to understand that getting adequate sunshine is very important during your pregnancy to ensure that your body is making enough vitamin D. You can get the adequate sunshine you need without getting a sunburn during your pregnancy.

It's good to understand that sunshine can be healthy in small doses!

Sunburn Dangerous Durning PregnancyHealthy sunshine exposure - 15 minutes a day of exposure without sunscreen.

Unhealthy sunshine exposure - 1 or more hour of exposure with or without sunscreen.

Spending 15 minutes outside without sunscreen on will allow your skin to create the vitamin D that it needs. Most sunscreens block your skin's ability to produce vitamin D, leading to a significant increase in vitamin D deficiencies in the last few years.

There are many supplements for vitamin D on the market, but most cannot be absorbed easily by the body. As your baby grows, it needs vitamin D in order to grow strong bones. During your pregnancy, your body also needs vitamin D to stop your bones from weakening.

Healthy sunshine exposure also helps the body to fight cancer and illnesses.

Sunburns are definitely no fun to experience at any time, and certainly would be no fun to deal with while pregnant. If you do get a sunburn, make sure you turn to safe, natural products to soothe the burn and help it heal fast.
