Building Blocks is a traditional quilt-as-you-go sampler quilt featuring twelve different quilt blocks, each pieced and quilted three or four times to create fourty-two unique quilt blocks. The resulting blocks were then put together with binding strips to create the finished throw-sized quilt.

I began designing this quilt in fall 2013 after realizing that my by-the-seat-of-my-pants approach to the Express Your Love Quilt Along hadn't gone very well. I wanted to create a project that would have more structure and a definite, single method to create the quilt blocks.
I was also feeling inspired to share lessons on blocks that had been my favorite since I started quilting: Nine Patch, Sawtooth Star, and Pinwheel Blocks. I also had fun designing brand new blocks using creative construction methods like the Slash Star block.
For the first time, I shared the spotlight of the quilt along with my husband Josh! We both quilted the blocks on videos posted throughout the year.
Josh quilted his blocks on printed Spoonflower Fabric. You can find this fabric available in three colorways:
Building Blocks in Blue and Gray | Building Blocks Colorful on White | Building Blocks Colorful on Purple |
If you purchase the Spoonflower Fabric, make sure to select 3 yards so you'll receive all 42 quilt blocks for the Building Blocks Quilt.
