Machine Maintenance
Machine Maintenance
Longarm machines are high powered, precision instruments that do not like to run dirty or dry. General maintenance like brushing out the machine and oiling it is something you need to do every day.
This isn't something that can wait for a yearly check up. Going into this purchase, you should be ready to take on servicing and maintenance of your longarm yourself.

Grace 16X: Best Beginner Longarm Quilting Machine
What makes the Grace 16X the best beginner longarm quilting machine? The affordable price (currently on sale for $3559.20), less intimidating 16-inch throat, and beautiful stitches (thanks to a stitch regulator) make this a great machine for beginning longarm quilters.
Who is the Grace 16X designed for? Quilters new to longarm quilting. This is a perfect first step longarm machine for quilters who need to go slow, build new skills, and could easily be intimidated by a bigger machine.
By the way, the Grace 16X was formerly called the Grace Qnique 16X - same machine, slightly different name, same awesome features.
Save 20% on All Grace Longarms in November — Plus a FREE Frame and Over $450 in Gifts
During this 20% off sale, the Grace 16X longarm is just $3,559.20 — and you can bundle it with your choice of three quilting frames, 100% free. Same price, no upcharge: add a Cutie Breeze, Q-Zone Hoop, or Q-Zone Queen frame to your 16X at no additional cost. (Want a larger or faster-loading frame? You can upgrade to a premium Grace frame too — see all your options below ↓.)
Through November, every 16X also includes a free Finesse Light Bar sized to fit your frame, plus a gift box of awesome quilting gear.

The Finesse Light Bar is an amazing overhead light bar that lets you select both the brightness and color temperature over your quilt. I prefer to work in a warm yellow light that's slightly dimmer than Grace Company's original Luminess light bar. The easy settings on the new Finesse Overhead Light Bar allow you to adjust your light to fit your needs perfectly.
You'll also receive a gift box of TrueCut rulers, rotary cutters, and quilting tools, a fat quarter bundle of fabric, and a starter set of longarm needles and bobbins — over $150 in tools and fabric to get you quilting from day one (Contents will vary).
All together this is an amazing deal - 20% off your 16X longarm, plus a free Finesse Light Bar and a gift box of cutting tools, fabric, needles, and bobbins — over $450 in free gifts, this month only.

What Makes this a Longarm Quilting Machine for Beginners?
Beginners to longarm quilting need a smaller quilting machine. The smaller 16-inch throat makes the Grace 16X less intimidating than our bigger longarm machines.
Since becoming a dealer in 2018, I have met and taught many quilters who bought longarms, but then were too afraid of them to use them. Even if you have quilted with a bigger sewing machine, switching to a longarm is an adjustment.
One thing that's different from a domestic sewing machine is the assembly required to set up your machine. See the process of unboxing and assembling this beginner longarm quilting machine in this video:
I set up this Grace 16X on the Evolution Elite Frame, which has dual tracks on both the bottom carriage and frame. If you are setting up your machine on a single track Q-Zone Frame, the process for attaching the encoders will be different. Reach out for help with this if you're strugging!
Yes, I Really Use and Love the Grace 16X!
I’m Leah Day — I’ve been quilting since 2005 and teaching quilters online through LeahDay.com since 2009. I’m the author of 365 Free Motion Quilting Designs, and free motion quilting has been my passion for over two decades. I love teaching beginners how to master the basics and beyond.
Here’s a secret that took me a few years to learn: most machine dealers are great salespeople, but few of them actually quilt on the machines they sell — so they can’t really understand your challenges as a beginner, or help when you’re learning your first free motion quilting fillers on your new longarm.
I’ve owned my Grace 16X since 2024 (back when it was still the Qnique 16X), and I use it regularly. When you buy from a dealer who owns this machine, uses it, and can shoot you a quick video to walk through a confusing step or suggest a quilting design — that’s a dealer who understands your beginner challenges and is ready to help.
One-on-one troubleshooting and quilting advice are available exclusively to my Grace 16X customers. Click Here to reach out if you're needing help!
Perfect Stitches Every Time
The Grace 16X is a stitch regulated longarm which means you can select the size of your stitch by the Stitches Per Inch setting and the machine will automatically match the speed you are moving to the movement of the needle.
Having a stitch regulator means no more worrying about your quilting stitches! This Grace 16X is capable of quilting 1700 stitches per minute. This is a slower SPI than our other longarm quilting machines, and it means you will need to move the machine slower than the Grace 16X Elite or 19X Elite.
For a beginning quilter, moving slow is a good thing! This machine will allow you to learn with less intimidation, move at a slower pace, and build the skills you need to quilt with confidence.
Having a stitch regulator means you'll be able to focus on your quilting design and trust that every stitch will be the same length. This is a big relief for quilters struggling to quilt their own quilts on a home sewing machine.

What can I Quilt with a Grace 16?
The Grace 16X Longarm is a basic machine designed for beginning longarm quilters. With 16 inches of harp space, you will be able to quilt across a 10-inch quilt block in one pass.
The needle area is illuminated with bright LED lights so you can clearly see your quilt. The handle bars have two buttons each and can be extended and rotated to fit your needs. Reposition the handles closer to the needle and angled inward when quilting on a smaller scale.
Two spool pins are located on the top of the machine along with a redesigned built-in bobbin winder so you can quickly wind the large M sized bobbins and get back to quilting.

Why do Some Quilters Pick the Grace 16X Elite Longarm Instead?
We have two longarm machines available in the Grace 16X Series:
- The Grace 16X has a stitch regulator so you can expect consistent stitches from the very beginning. But it is limited to 1700 stitches per minute. This speed is the limiting factor and you may soon find you can move faster than this machine allows.
- The Grace 16X Elite has a stitch regulator and a faster motor capable of 2100 stitches per minute, plus a bigger touchscreen monitor and more on-board features.
Many quilters pick the Grace 16X Elite longarm instead because it can stitch faster and has a few more features than the Grace 16X.
