Explore a Winter Wonderland of beautiful snowflake motifs and gorgeous free motion quilting designs. This 50-inch square wall hanging quilt looks intricate and advanced, when in actuality, if you can free motion quilt and cut on a line, you can definitely make this quilt.

The key to the simplicity of this quilt lies in Leah's the Reverse Shadow Trapunto Technique.

This technique involves layering felt over fabric, stitching your motif, then clipping out the snowflake motif design. What looks like complex and impossible appliqued snowflakes are actually just clipped felt!

Another thing that makes Winter Wonderland so easy to create is the unique Quilt-As-You-Go method of putting it together.

Each block is first created separately, fully quilted, then put together with a cool curvy bias binding technique to complete the quilt. So you don't have to fight the bulk and weight of the whole quilt in your machine at once.

Each block can be quilted as simply or as intricately as you like, and this is a terrific way to experiment with fun free motion quilting designs found in Leah's book, 365 Free Motion Quilting Designs.

 

Special note from Leah: I originally created this quilt simply to give myself permission to play with designing snowflakes. They were loads of fun to play with and the technique simple to apply to each individual block.

The combination of the intricate snowflake blocks and dense free motion quilting proved to be very dynamic! The original quilt won many awards including Best Machine Quilting at AQS Knoxville, and many quilters have reported winning ribbons with this design as well.
