Small Sewing Machines Need Smaller Stencils

When I developed the original printable quilting stencils in 2024, my original goal was to create a fun, repeating design that was easy to print at home with minimal paper waste. The size of the original stencils wasn't a problem on the Little Rebel Sewing Machine, which has a huge 13-inch harp space.

Quilters tried the stencils and shared feedback. The #1 request was for a smaller stencil to fit smaller home sewing machines. This summer I began quilting on a Singer Heavy Duty, and realized pretty quickly - yes, we need a smaller stencil!

This new mini stencil has been sized to fit your hands nicely, but still provide a soft-scale, continuous line design you can quilt edge-to-edge across your quilt.

Question: Can I quilt with mini stencils on bigger machines?

Answer: Yes, absolutely! Bigger machines have much more flexibility so you can use these mini stencils or the original size printable quilting stencils if you have a machine with a 9 inch or larger throat space. You can even use these stencils on a longarm machine if desired.

How to Quilt with Mini Paper Quilting Stencils

1. Print the stencil designs on regular 20 lb copy paper (the cheap stuff!)
2. Cut along all the dashed lines to create 4 square mini stencils
3. Place stencils on your quilt and stitch on the line
4. Tear away the paper to reveal beautiful quilting

Yes, tearing the paper away at the end is the one slow part of this process. Make sure to follow the tips within the mini stencil instructions to loosen the paper first. It also helps to make smaller quilting stitches by running your machine a little faster and moving your hands a little slower as you follow the line.
