Tips for Machine Quilting Wobbly Cosmos

This is a Center-Fill Design which means you start in the center of your quilt and always quilt outward to the outer edges. In the case of Wobbly Cosmos, your goal is to quilt gently curvying lines from the center to the outer edges while also slowly increasing the space between the lines.

I think it's a lot easier to quilt this particular design with marked lines. The curving lines can be harder to match up and quilt consistently, especially in the center of the design and having a marked line to work with just makes everything easier.

As with all curvy line designs, you'll need to watch out for signs of fabric shifting and any pleats and puckers as you stitch over your lines of quilting. Make sure to lift your foot and rotate the quilt as you stitch along deeper curves. If you try to stitch and steer through the curves at the same time, you'll often see strange ripples appear over the quilt - those are whiskers.

To avoid whiskers just lift the foot often to rotate and reposition the quilt so you can stay on the curving lines.

If that feels really clunky to you or hard to remember to lift and rotate the quilt, you can also try quilting it with free motion quilting. Wobbly Cosmos was the 98th design I shared to the Free Motion Quilting Project and here is the original quilting tutorial for this design:

I hope you can see both methods of machine quilting can work great when quilting Wobbly Cosmos. Which is the best for you? Try quilting it both ways and see for yourself!
